PVP is a hydrophilic polymer that possesses no inherent antimicrobial activity; however, due to its affinity for cell membranes, it can deliver iodine directly to the bacterial cell surface—a mechanism that significantly enhances iodine's antimicrobial efficacy. Iodine targets the bacterial cytoplasm and cytoplasmic membrane, rapidly killing the bacteria within seconds. When molecules essential for biological survival—such as sulfhydryl compounds, peptides, proteins, lipids, and cytosine—come into contact with PVP-I, they are immediately oxidized or iodinated and rendered inactive, thereby facilitating sustained bactericidal action.
